7 Tips To Beat Loneliness While Living Alone

Living alone may sound like fun, but sometimes it just brings about an intense loneliness. How to avoid that…

Be it any age, living alone has the advantages of being free and independent in many ways, but sometimes can have a very strong minus point – feelings of loneliness. And whether you’re a freshman just out of your parents’ wing or in your advanced years with family having little time for you – it’s natural to feel cut off. Here’s how to break out of any negative feelings and be happy even when you are living alone.

  1. Avoid blue mood triggers: There are certain times of day or mayhaps a few situations that bring home the fact that you are living alone, which can then make you think dark thoughts. Avoid those situations – if coming home to an empty home bothers you, dial a friend while you unlock your door. If it’s the morning cup of coffee that gives you the blues, go for a walk instead.
  2. Join classes or clubs: Boredom and routine can bring about thoughts of loneliness – try and join hobby or even exercise classes of any kind. You’ll learn something new and perhaps even make some new friends.
  3. Host dinners or luncheons: You may have moved away, but that’s no reason to not keep in touch. Host casual luncheons or dinners and invite your family as well as friends, both new and old, from time to time. You’ll get return invites this way and slowly build-up a thriving social life which has many health benefits too.
  4. Get a furry friend: Pets are a big source of company – and studies prove that keeping a pet can alleviate boredom, keep you stress free and make you a happier person, inside out.
  5. Pack your bags: Living alone also means that you have the freedom to take a trip as often you want, and whenever you want. So travel to meet friends and family or visit any jaunt you have always wanted to do, alone or with like-minded company.
  6. Keep yourself busy: You cannot always avoid being home alone, so try and keep yourself busy while you are at home. Pick up a new hobby, read that book, get a couple of DVDs or get cracking on spring cleaning – a busy you will be a happier you.
  7. Open those doors: Finally, whenever you are at home – don’t shut yourself off from the world just because you are having a mood swing. Open the windows and curtains and let sunlight brighten those blues away!
