With the kids back in school and colder weather on the way, it won’t be long before the sniffles and sneezing begin. That's right, cold and flu season is steadily creeping upon us. But no worries, because there is definitely an essential oil for that!
A look inside of Mother Earth's Medicine Cabinet will show you 7 different essential oils you should add to your collection to help combat cold and flu season. This list of 7 consists of my personal favorites to use.
Eucalyptus – In a previous article on essential oils, I discussed the benefits of Eucalyptus. It is one of my definite go-to oils when I am all stuffed up. This oil is full of antiviral, antibacterial, decongestant, and anti-inflammatory properties. A steam treatment or a hot steamy bath with some of this oil will help open the airways and passages, allowing some relief.
Thieves Oil – It is said that this oil was created back in the 16th century specifically for the plague. Grave robbers and thieves would use it in order to safely rob the sick without becoming infected. Here’s a link to a history. This mixture of oils provides antiviral, antiseptic, and antibacterial properties. It will purify the air when used in a diffuser. The combination of oils consists of clove, cinnamon bark, eucalyptus, rosemary, and lemon oil. You can also dilute the mixture and use it as a throat spray.
Lemon Essential Oil – Lemon, or just about any citrus essential oil, will boost your immune system because of the high vitamin C content. The vitamin C is also responsible for stimulating the white blood cells which help fight off illness.
Peppermint – This oil is full of antiseptic and antiviral properties. It is also an expectorant, so it will help clear out the congestion. It makes a great steam inhalation treatment but NOT FOR LITTLE ONES (it is far too potent). A diffuser is a better choice when it comes to the little ones.
Lavender – Lavender is known to be perfect for babies and little kids because it is one of the most gentle oils. It has antiseptic and antimicrobial properties, as well. It makes a great bath, providing medicine while also providing some relaxation.
Tea Tree – This is just an everything oil – it is so potent and so useful for almost everything that ails. This plant’s oil is full of antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, and antiviral properties. I like to use it for steam treatments, and I also really enjoy making a hand sanitizer with the oil.
Oregano Oil – Oregano oil is incredible -- it has very powerful antibacterial, antibiotic, and antioxidant properties. I had a terrible case of strep throat one winter and I used some oil of oregano. It only took a few minutes for the throat pain to subside. It also clears up any congestion in the sinus tract and chest. I sometimes use it in a steam treatment but I also like to use it as a foot soak.
Don’t let cold and flu season bring you down this year. Stock up on some essential oils and get ready for the battle of the germs. Remember, essential oils can be used in many ways, but always do your research before using something new.
