March 17 is St. Patrick’s Day, and while it’s true you can dye all your food and beverages green and call it a day, we’ve got some other ideas for how to celebrate the Irish-turned-American holiday.  Some of them involve food of course, but others focus on enjoying the fun festivities of the day!

Ask A Practitioner: Should I Avoid Nightshades?

Join Basmati.com every week for a Q&A session with one of Basmati’s practitioners, Melissa Hill (FDN-P)! We know that there is a lot of confusing information out there, which can make applying health advice overwhelming.  Sometimes, it’s best to ask a practitioner directly, so each week we’ll cover a common health question!

Your Guide to Summer Flowers: Petunias

Petunias are a member of the Solanaceae family that includes eggplants, peppers, potatoes and tomatoes. They became a separate species about thirty million years ago. The Petunia inflata is a small purple flower that attracts bees with its bright color, but some flowers lost their color and became Petunia axillaris, a larger white flower, resulting in the production of modified scent compounds to attract hawkmoths.

A Healthy Flavorsome Egg Recipe That Will Make Your Day

Do you have a hankering for a weekend breakfast that’s a little indulgent but still healthy, and also easy to put together? If so, shakshuka could do the trick nicely.

During the week I’m mostly all business, which means my breakfast will likely consist of presoaked oats or fruit, depending on the season. But on those mornings when I want to linger a little in the kitchen yet stop short of a culinary challenge, I turn to shakshuka.

5 Produce Items That You Really Should Buy Organic

Just over a year ago, I changed my grocery shopping habits. Instead of looking for the best deals, I began looking for the best options for my health. I was already buying quite a few organic packaged products, but not as much organic produce. Now, I buy fewer packaged products overall and 100 percent organic produce whenever possible. Why? After taking a few food and environmental politics classes, I was enlightened about how unfortunately detrimental to one’s health pesticides truly can be.

September’s Bounty: 10 Must-Have Seasonal Produce Items

In all honesty, September always gives me mixed emotions. Let’s face it; it’s a strange month. We’re all too focused on savoring every last bit of that familiar summer breeze before we part ways, until next year. Yet, at the same time, we’re pinning all things “pumpkin spice” on Pinterest, and already shopping for Halloween decorations.

Well Seasoned - A Cooking With Cast Iron Series: Veggie Breakfast Scrambler

What I love about this recipe is how flexible it is. Whatever it is you want to add to your scrambler you can simply add and make adjustments. A meat lover could add meat to the equation and the dish would work the same. Sometimes I only use salt and pepper while other times I spice it up. It truly makes a great campfire breakfast!

This one pan veggie breakfast scrambler is incredible -- it’s a hearty meal perfect for an autumn morning.

Vegan Stuffed Peppers Recipe

These stuffed peppers are a great veggie entrée or side when you’re grilling! Cheesy and savory, both vegans and omnivores are sure to love them. Clean-up is easy for this one too, since all you’re cooking in is a bit of foil. The peppers are surprisingly filling, so you can serve them on their own or cut in half as a side dish; I like to pair them with rice, cous cous or mashed potatoes. As always, feel free to experiment with different sauces, spices and vegetables to make them your own!
