#WellnessWednesday- Yoga For Life: Week 144

Dancing Warrior

Sthira (strength) and sukha (softness) are the two physical qualities that make up the practice of Yoga asana (poses). Sufficient strength is required to safely perform Yoga poses. But most of the time, an element of surrender and softness is also essential. This dichotomy is seen in almost all of the poses, but it is especially easy to feel in dancing warrior pose. A strong base of support in the legs supports the soft extension of the upper body into a side stretch. Without sthira or suhka, this pose would be impossible.

What to do:

Stand with your right foot about one leg length behind the left.

Left toes point forward and right toes point to the right.

Bend the front knees to 90 degrees.

Keep the right arm resting gently on the right leg.

Push into the feet.

Reach the left arm up and over the head.

As you side bend to the right, notice your breath in the left side of the rib cage.

Stay for 5-10 full belly breaths.

Then practice with the right foot in front.

Benefits

Opens the rib cage, allowing for deeper breath.

Opens the heart.

Encourages bravery and strength.

Modifications:

For more stability widen the stance and shorten the length between front and back feet.
