Q. What are the benefits of a neti pot nasal rinse? Why should I use one?
A. Neti is a process of cleansing and purifying the nasal passages, usually done with a water and saline solution. The neti pot is most practically used to bring relief to sinus troubles, allergies, headaches, and certain eye and ear problems. When our sinuses become congested, it is due to the over production of mucus in our sinus cavity. This production of mucus is usually in response to a perceived threat or irritant, like pollen, dust, allergens, or bacteria. This creates the symptoms you experience from allergies or a cold.
In Ayurveda and Hatha yoga, neti is included as one of the six purification practices (shatkarmas) designed to balance prana within our body. Helping us breathe deeper, think clearer, feel lighter, and let prana (life force) flow through us easier.
The neti pot is a great tool to help relieve some of the irritants and irritation in the sinuses.
Benefits of Nasal Rinsing with Neti Pot
- Rinses away irritants like allergens, pollen, and dust
- Gently removes excess mucus
- Soothes and relieves nasal dryness
- Reduces inflammation of irritated mucus membranes in the nose
- Elevates overall sinus health
- Improves breathing
- Promotes clear mind
To use a neti pot, lean over a sink, tilt your head to the side, and open your mouth to breathe only through your mouth. Start to tip the pot (or gently squeeze the bottle) so that the saline solution flows through one nostril and out the other nostril. Pour about half the solution then switch sides. Gently blow each nostril when you are finished to expel remaining solution and mucus.
Make sure you use clean filtered or distilled warm water for your rinse and be sure to clean and dry your neti pot after each use. Neti pot is best done before eating and followed with nasya oil to soothe and moisturize the nasal passages.
