Living Off The Grid: Fire Is Life

Before electricity, the fireplace or wood stove was the heart of every home. For those of us that live off of the grid, we know that fire is life, just as it was back then. Fire is everything: it provides heat for warmth and cooking and provides light at night.

Everything about fire serves a purpose in one way or another:

Do not set your eyes on things far off.” – Pythian Odes

Several people lately have asked me some iteration of “What are the gifts where you are?” so I’ve been spending some time reflecting on this question

Mornings aren’t for everyone, and for some, getting out of bed requires immediate caffeine consumption! Sometimes, it just isn't possible, it seems, to maintain certain relationships, and so it is that many people move from one partner to another – constantly searching for the “perfect mate.” What if a perspective could be adopted that acknowledged relationships as alchemical containers? All In The Head: A Short Story On Anxiety

This week I had a funny incident take place that showed me just how much of the anxiety I experience is of my own making.

On Tuesday, I sent off a flurry of text messages – to my landlord, a close friend, a new friend, etc. – and didn’t hear back from any of them. Not a single person. I made and received calls, but not a single text message came through. Being the person I am, I went into a tizzy and started imagining the worst: “I’m being a nuisance! They don’t want to be friends anymore! They’re trying to send me a passive-aggressive message!”

In The Middle Of Here And Now: A Big Lesson From a Little Book

I’ve been thinking a great deal, lately, about relationships.  When I use the word ‘relationship,’ I speak to all human connection, and not simply to romance, though what follows in this article, I believe, is as true for lovers as it is for friends. Recently, a person I love has become physically absent in my life.  She’s fine.  I am too.  We are making the best, I should say, of the fact that right now we live in different places.  For the moment, our paths seem to be diverging.  Recently, I went to the Adirondacks to clear my mind, or better said, to st

Daily Changes You Can Make To Be More Sustainable

So, what exactly is sustainability? Most people might not know what it is because it’s not something that can be easily defined, but I’ll do my best to do so. To me, in order to be sustainable, you must be doing everything in your power to meet your own needs, while keeping the needs of future generations in mind too. In other words, we cannot destroy and/or deplete the natural resources that Earth has to offer. Luckily, there are numerous small changes you can make that will help the conservation effort and lessen your impact.

Where Logic Meets Intuition

I’ve been thinking a lot this week about logic and intuition. I notice that for the most part, people seem to advocate one or the other.
