Each new year represents a clean slate and a time to create course corrections to those areas in our lives that aren’t meeting our expectations.  This is why we create things like new year’s resolutions and create promises to make this upcoming calendar year better than the last.  Whereas these intentions are great, there is at times a reluctance to implement these changes in our lives because it typically represents moving out of our comfort zone. 

This week we have Jupiter and Venus coming conjunct to the exact degree in the sign of Sagittarius.  I will discuss how these two planets interact both individually and together and what this can indicate.  I’ll also cast it in the light of the eclipse that is taking place this Sunday, January 20.

Wait - What’s Going On?

The Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse on January 20-21 is also a Super Moon because it will appear larger than normal due to its close proximity to Earth. While this eclipse will be visible in Europe, Asia, Africa, and North and South America, you will also feel its disorganizing impact, particularly if you have a cusp birthday: January 20-22, February 19-21, March 20-22, April 20-22, May 21-23, June 21-23, July 22-24, August 22-24, September 22-24, October 23-25, November 22-24, or December 21-23.

In previous articles, I have touched on the conjunction of Sun and Saturn and the possible effects that come with this conjunction.  However, I didn’t give much information on the special context as to why this is the case.  Saturn and the Sun have a special relationship.  Before I mentioned that they were mutual enemies, in regards to what in Vedic Astrology we call the natural relationships of the planets, but I didn’t get into their special familial dynamic that is revealed through their shared mythology.

Let’s say that one is on a sports team and their ultimate goal is to win a championship.  However, the current incarnation of the team just doesn’t allow for this.  Let’s say that the necessary changes to be made and the only way for this to happen is to marginalize one’s input, recognition, and utilization.  Other people need to be brought in and new strategies need to be employed which will move the needle towards the goal, but comes at this self-detriment.

As you are probably aware, we are rounding out the calendar year of 2018 at the end of December.  However, astrologically speaking, we actually see the new year as starting on the winter solstice which will be happening at the end of this week when the Sun ingresses into the sign of Capricorn.  Before we get into the indications of what the Sun’s upcoming ingress into Capricorn can bring with it, I’d like to discuss some interesting facts about Vedic Astrology’s viewpoint on years and a deeper understanding of our own calendar and how it relates to astrology.

Finally, this week we have the official end of this Mercury retrograde cycle.  Last week we had Mercury leaving Sagittarius where it was with Sun and Jupiter and bringing its distractions and disruptions.  When Mercury went retrograde into Scorpio it was the first sign of breaking up the distraction cycle that this retrogression period was all about.  Now, with it finally going direct again, we have the official end of this cycle.

The gist of the cosmic interplay this week is that of parsing out purpose from distraction.  Astrologically speaking, we have Sun joining Jupiter and Mercury in the sign of Sagittarius.  Let’s explore the specificities of this situation and how these placements lend themselves towards creating this energy.
