Often when meditation is mentioned people harbor some vague, albeit extraordinary, notion of hocus pocus incantation or yogis in India miraculously levitating a few inches off the ground by the sheer force of their consciousness.

While I cannot vouch for aberrations from the law of gravity, consistent meditation offers extraordinary benefits that might amount to practical magic in your life. The practice is helpful for anyone controlling errant thoughts that otherwise might swarm with chaos. Meditation clears clutter that might overwhelm a person in the alternative.

The act of meditating can help you rewire your brain in the sense that the more you think positively, the stronger the part of your brain that allows you to experience positivity becomes. And today, tech-enabled meditation is making it easier than ever to learn how to meditate. At the click of a button, you can escape to a place of calm to help be mindful and take a moment to reset your internal dialogue. Whether you want to meditate for five minutes, 10 minutes or 20, there are several technologies out there to help get the job done. Here are five to get you started:

This week's tip: Your meditative practice starts with your breath. Focus on your breath and nothing else. Your mind will wander. Come back to your breath. It can be helpful to count. I count four in and four out. Your breath will always be there for you.

This week's tip: To start a meditative practice you need nothing but yourself and place to sit! You can meditate in a chair or on the floor. Just find a quiet spot. Don't worry about being a supremely serene being. Every practice has to start somewhere.
