What is the greatest challenge you have overcome/are overcoming?
As a child I was very unhealthy and overweight. At one point I weighed about 250 pounds, had severe asthma, and hated everything physical, nutritious, or "healthy". The journey that has brought me to where I am today has not been an easy one, but it has been totally worth it. I still struggle with emotional eating and body image BUT I now have the tools to help me though anything that might come my way. I am so very lucky to be able to relate to people going through similar challenges, struggles, and/or journeys.
What is unique to you about your work?
Yoga is not just physical, it is also mental and emotional. I am constantly amazed by the positive changes that can come from a regular practice. People are literally able to transform their lives, and through teaching yoga I am blessed to watch these transformations take place. Every single time I teach I am able to learn more about my own self through students' discipline, humility, dedication and compassion.
How do you guide clients into their own healing/inner freedom?
In my classes I always try to create a safe space for people to meditate and "let go" (be present). My goal is to leave each and every person in my class with a sense of accomplishment, less stress, and a greater understanding of their own power when it comes to healing AND freedom.
What tools have you found least/most effective in your work?
I have found that humility is unbelievably important. The class is never about me and never about the facility, it is always about the people in the class and their experience. I have also found that the closer I am to my own practice the more effective I can be as an instructor. When I know what a certain posture feels like in my own body, I can easily communicate that feeling to others. Lastly, I have found that it is important to always keep learning and to be open to new knowledge. Yoga is a vast discipline and there is so much to learn not only physically (actual postures) but mentally, emotionally, and even spiritually.
